Despite what you read in the 'papers, beekeeping is thriving in the UK, although wild colony numbers have been severely depleted due to disease and habitat loss. The reason why the number of hived bees has grown is partly because more people have taken up the craft in recent years and also because we are able to manage disease better. For the moment at least. Worryingly there are threats around the corner from imported pests so we do need to vigilant!
